Well designed but flimsey – Installation of the new 75′ long Thule Force XL was relatively easy. Nice features were the sliding mounting brackets for the included clamps that fit perfectly and securely around our 2019 Subaru Ascents factory mounting crossbars. l mounted the box centered on the roof and as far back as possible to minimize windstream interference, or drag and induced turbulence, over the roof. With the Thule Force XL all the way back as far as possible, the rear lift gate still fully opens to within one inch of the box which itself easily opens from either side, a nice feature. Thule includes multiple cargo securing straps, another nice feature. I test drove our 2019 Ascent on a windless afternoon on a long flat stretch of expressway in very light traffic. I always monitor fuel mileage using the onboard digital fuel consumption monitor for both instant and average mpg. For this test the only occupant was the driver and no cargo, to compare mileage and handling, to our normal mpg with 1-3 passengers and a few shopping items. With the box mounted and the cruise activated on a very long, flat, stretch of low traffic expressway with no curves and at 80 degrees F with no wind, there was zero mpg change at 55 mph and I could not detect any change in wind noise. At a steady 70 mph there was a 2-4 mpg reduction and obvious, though not objectionable, wind noise. But at 75 mph the average mpg declined 6-8 mpg and at 80 mph it was a 10-12 mpg loss and a lot more wind noise at both 75 and 80 mph. But, it was still possible for relatively normal conversation even though the wind noise was markedly greater. The mpg loss will likely be greater when there are multiple passengers and cargo. At all speeds in light traffic with a few semi trucks, handling was secure and no changes in handling was noticeable. Our Thule Force XL is 75 inches long. Roof length is 85 inches and the unit is high enough to easily clear the rear roof mounted antenna. Mounting it as far back as possible clearly helped reduce drag and there was no discernible increase in wind noise at any tested speed when in the rearmost position. There was also no lift gate issues and no rear mounted rooftop antenna interference. We can see our best use will be cruising at the generally legal expressway limit of 70 mph, or less when it is posted as less.

Nervous buy it worked beautifully – So when this came on a truck, I went outside to see if the delivery guy needed a hand. He said no, it was lite. He wasn’t kidding. So you unbox this, pull it out and go oh boy. As a previous reviewer stated, it is very thin plastic as the top shell. Now I have a Thule carrier that’s over 40 years old. If I dropped it off the top of my Chevy Traverse, nothing will happen. It’s double wall construction like a hard cooler. This is more like one of those blue storage bins. Definitely try not to drop it. Not sure how the top will do.

Perfect – Exactly what I needed for a recent trip. Arrived on time in a large box and was super easy to get installed (comes with instructions if you feel like reading them). Annoying it has to be stored the way it does, but I will make it happen.

More Room! – Overall, this is a great product to expand storage for road trips. It’s a little heavy, but still manageable. The locking mechanism could be a little sturdier, but it works.

Legit cargo box – Very aerodynamic. Mileage barely dropped. Can store alot of product. Relatively light. Doesn’t create any odd wind noise. Be careful with double hinges (be sure to only unlock one side at a time) I was packing at midnight and forgot I had one side slightly open and went to open other side. Let’s just say it was a absolute pain in the ass to get it lined and back in place again.
